What is a NAB file?

NAB files mostly belong to GroupWise. The NAB file extension can refer to different file types depending on its creation environment.
GroupWise Address Book: Many NAB files are encoded in UTF-8 and serve as the address book for Novell GroupWise, storing contact information used in an email and collaboration system.
Java Serialized Object: Other NAB files are Java serialized objects. In these cases, the file acts as a license file for GRAPHISOFT products and is managed within a Java environment.
Unity Game Asset Bundle: Some NAB files use the UnityFS format. They are asset bundles used to package game assets in Unity-based projects.
Use the appropriate application for each type:

• Novell GroupWise client for address book files.
• Java tools for serialized license files.
• Unity Editor or asset extraction tools for Unity asset bundles.

How do you open NAB files?

You need a suitable software like GroupWise to open a NAB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NAB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NAB file directly in the browser:. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. The NAB file extension is not common and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 55% of all NAB files are using the well-known UTF-8 file format to store the data. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 14 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 170 KB. It is a modern file type. These files can be linked to contacts, adressbuch and frequent.
• 20% of all NAB files store the data in the UnityFS file format. UnityFS is short for "Unity File System". This Unity Game Engine package is a bundle of several compressed Unity assets. Each asset may contain 2D texture, text resources, music files, scene objects, etc. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 1 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: UnityFS, 2021.3.36f1 and .resource. 00cc09302411caac0c4dc360ac65a8947cc6083a377d19b38c6db1b9051a8876.nab or 00b784604811e9e1b59b458e034e5de24fa376c43ee17bcaaebc5d122c6f0bcc.nab is a typical file name. Such files sometimes refer to caac and bcaaebc.

The remaining 25% of all NAB files are different files with different signatures, such as Novell Groupwise Address Book, Netscape Communicator Address Book and Java.
