How to open a NAS file
You need a suitable software like EMEP/NASTRAN/Allplan/XnViewMP to open a NAS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NAS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NAS file directly in the browser:. Programs that open and convert NAS files:
- EMEP/NASTRAN/Allplan/XnViewMP
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NAS files are often referred to as EMEP/NASTRAN/Allplan/XnViewMP data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Nasal (Script) by Andy RossNasal is a language written for use in a personal project. It is a small-but-complete embeddable scripting languages. It is still young and incomplete in a few places, but is under active development and has been integrated as the extension language for the FlightGear simulator. This file format is classified as Source Code.

NAS file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the NAS files looks like this:
The NAS file extension is rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 40% of all NAS files have the same signature 1001. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 12 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 360 KB. The file type is very recent. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. EMEP, AM01L, Environmental Impact Monitoring Center, , , Yerevan, , , and days from file reference point. AM0001R.20180601.20180601.glass_sinter.nitrogen_dioxide.air.1y.1d.AM.nas is a typical file name. Files like these have the following tags: dioxide, nitrogen, sinter, glass, aerosol, sampler, concentration, particle and number.
- 15% of all NAS files belong to Nastran input data. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are often between 1 KB and 15 MB in size. The files contain the following words: GRID, BEGIN BULK, Generated, NASTRAN and file.
All other NAS files (45%) have no uniform format. Tagged as filter, mineral, dust, pack, teom, high or mass. If you want to find out what your NAS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for NAS File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a nas data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NAS files
- Associate the NAS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest NAS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available EMEP/NASTRAN/Allplan/XnViewMP update.
- To make sure that your NAS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NAS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
