All about NSE Files
The NSE file type is primarily associated with Nmap.
What is an NSE file?
They are used by the Nmap network scanning tool to perform automated network discovery and security tests.
How do you open NSE files?
You need a suitable software like Nmap to open an NSE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NSE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NSE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NSE files:
- Nmap
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NSE files are often referred to as Nmap developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Nmap Security ScannerThe Nmap Scripting Engine allows users to write (and share) simple scripts (using the Lua programming language,) to automate a wide variety of networking tasks. This file format is classified as Source Code.
NSE file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the NSE files:
The NSE file ending includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in NSE files are:
- 60% of all NSE files have the same signature local . These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. NSE files can be up to 57 KB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 10 KB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords local stdnse = require "stdnse", local nmap = require "nmap", local shortport = require "shortport", local string = require "string", description = [[ and local table = require "table" are typical for these files. Files like these are about info, http, brute, enum, vuln, exchange, bitcoin and targets.
- 25% of all NSE files start with the magic bytes description, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The average file size is 2 KB with most files being between 2 KB and 4 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: description = [[, Detects whether the specified URL is vulnerable to the Exchange Server SSRF Vulnerability (CVE-2021-26855), local http = require "http" and local shortport = require "shortport". A usual file name is http-vuln-cve2021-26855.nse or facebook.nse. These files are often associated with vulscan.
The remaining 15% of all NSE files are files with no common format. Files like these are sometimes linked to address, discover, ciphers, broadcast, multicast, getaddr, acarsd or snmp. Just click the "Choose your .nse file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your NSE file is.
