Windows 7, along with desktop search, introduces Federated Search. With Federated Search you can create small files that allow you to search beyond your PC in Windows Explorer.
Federated Search is based on OpenSearch and the RSS format. These are open standards so it's fairly easy to create custom search connectors for any remote location you wish. For example, you can search various sites from within Windows Explorer.
You install the Search Connectors by double clicking them in Windows 7. Explorer will automatically install the connector. Then, create a shortcut to the actual Search, which is located in your Users Folder\Search.
