What is a PDR file?

PDR files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. A PDR file is a driver which a Windows system uses to communicate with devices connected to its Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports. The file is actually a Windows executable (EXE) but with a different filename extension. Another type of PDR file is a document recovered by the now discontinued ProntoDoc plugin for Word document processor. The plugin was used to generate document templates. Symbian, a discontinued operating system for mobile devices saves a printer resource in a PDR file.

How to open a PDR file

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a PDR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PDR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PDR file directly in the browser:. PDR file format:

To view or edit PDR files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the PDR files produces the following result:

The PDR file extension is rarely used and does not have a uniform file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all PDR files start with the bytes Þ­Ê» crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 45 bytes in size and range from 13 bytes to 45 bytes. Such files are related to person-related data.
• 10% of all PDR files are based on the well-known EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 9 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode and Rich!1. An example of a file name is UMSSPDR.PDR.
