What is a PFP file?

PFP files mostly belong to Unity. Unity asset archives are the primary type of PFP files. In many cases, these files act as a packed file format that holds game assets and project data used by the Unity platform. They work as a container that bundles multiple files together for easy transport and use in development projects.
Other uses include:

In all cases, this file extension does not follow a single standard. For ZIP-based archives, common archive managers may work if you change the extension. For Unity files, you will need the Unity editor or a specialized tool to view and manage the assets.

How to open PFP files

You need a suitable software like Unity to open a PFP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PFP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PFP file directly in the browser:. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PFP files:

As a file extension, PFP isn't very common and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 70% of all PFP files belong to Xenonauts game data archive. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. PFP files are between 6 MB and 78 MB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as PFPK. Some examples of file names are assets.pfp. Files like these are sometimes connected to sound, scripts and sounds.
• 10% of all PFP files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are compressed and saved in one PFP file. The included 3 to 14 files have file names such as code_order.txt, settings.json and settings.pfs. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. Most of these files are 50 KB to 8 MB in size. The files contain the following words: code_order.txt, gcode and json. Such files are related to fork.
