What is a PGR file

PGR files mostly belong to Ladybug Tools. PGR files are not one single file type but are used in various specialized applications. The most common version is a Ladybug video file used by Ladybug Tools that works with video data from systems developed by Point Grey Research.
Other variants include:

A JSON-based file holding progress reports or climbing competition results.

A proprietary explosives data file (also known as a PGI-1000 Plasmagram Data file) used in systems like the IonScan 600. More details can be found on the Smiths Detection site.

How to open PGR files

You need a suitable software like Ladybug Tools to open a PGR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. PGR file format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PGR files produces the following result:

PGR is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 35% of all PGR files start with the magic bytes PGR, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 370 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PGRLADYBUGSTREAM. The following filename is common: ladybug-20180601.pgr. Such files are related to camera, stream, bugpgr, romdas and lady.
• 25% of all PGR files are using the well-known JSON file format to store the data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 1 KB. Examples of file names are ergebnis-2020-06-01 10-30.pgr. These files can be linked to person-related data.
