Opening an RBE File

The RBE file type is primarily associated with Ruby.

RBEFile Extension RBE
File extension: RBE
File type:  executable

What is an RBE file?

RBE files mostly belong to Ruby. RBE files are mainly used as Ruby Bytecode Executable files. They store Ruby code that has been converted into a binary format for execution by a Ruby virtual machine. This format is not meant for manual editing because the content is not plain text.
  • If the file is a Ruby bytecode, run it using a compatible Ruby interpreter.
  • If it appears as a manifest, it holds extension metadata for integration with design tools.
  • Some RBE files also serve as Revit extension manifest files, where they define configuration details for an add-on. More details and support for this usage are available at Chief Architect.
FilExt.com tip: These dual roles show that even a single file extension can be used in different application contexts. Use the appropriate software environment to view or run the file based on its function.

How to open an RBE file

You need a suitable software like Ruby to open an RBE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RBE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RBE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RBE files:

    1. Ruby
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RBE files are often referred to as Ruby executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Chief Architect / Ruby Interpreter
*.RBE files primarily represent Ruby Bytecode Executable files. These contain compiled Ruby code, ready for execution by a Ruby interpreter. They are commonly associated with software developed using the Ruby programming language. In a less common context, *.RBE may also refer to Revit extension manifest files used by the architectural design software, Chief Architect. These files play a role in extending Revit's functionality. This file format is classified as Executable file / Extension manifest.

    RBE file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the RBE files comes to the following conclusion:

RBE is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type mainly uses a defined RBE format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other RBE files (4%) have different formats. Tagged as dmlanguage, generate, handler, startup, bubble, corner, skin or soap. If you want to find out what your RBE file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with RBE files

    • Associate the RBE file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open executables. Because only the current version supports the latest RBE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Ruby update.
    • To make sure that your RBE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
