Opening RDX Files
The RDX file type is primarily associated with RStudio.
What is an RDX file?
They can include:
- R Data and Redux Files: These files are often GZIP-compressed and used to save R data or Redux persist state. They work with environments like RStudio.
- Compressed Archives: Some RDX files are ZIP archives. These hold compressed data and can be opened with common archive tools.
- XML Project Files: In certain cases, RDX files follow an XML structure containing project or CAD information as used by aSa Export.
- Exam Results Files: Some are encoded in UTF-16 (LE) and store exam or simulation data from systems such as MedHub. More details can be found at MedHub.
- Configuration Files: A few RDX files store configuration settings for utilities like Deep Freeze. Information is available at Faronics.
FilExt.com note: The file’s role depends on the software that created it. Knowing the source helps in choosing the right application to open and modify it.
How can I open an RDX file?
You need a suitable software like RStudio to open an RDX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RDX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RDX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RDX files:
- RStudio
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RDX files are often referred to as RStudio data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Reflex (Data File) by Borland Software CorporationReflex is an old DOS flat-file database system. The size of the database was limited to the amount of system memory.
RDX format details:
To find out what program is needed to open RDX files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the RDX files:
The RDX file extension is rather rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all RDX files save the data in GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. RDX files are between 180 bytes and 1 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The file name Rdata.rdx is characteristic of these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to persist, redux and child.
- 20% of all RDX files are based on the zip format, so several files are compressed and saved in one RDX file. RDX files contain from 2 to 30 compressed files. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 1 KB to 3 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. json.
The remaining 45% of all RDX files are files with no common format, often, for example, UTF-16 (LE). Tagged as info, project, osce or rwjms. Just click the "Choose your .rdx file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RDX file is.

How to solve problems with RDX files
- Associate the RDX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open versatile data containers. Because only the current version supports the latest RDX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RStudio update.
- To make sure that your RDX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
