Opening a RET File
The RET file type is primarily associated with CaseWare IDEA.
What is a RET file?
FilExt.com tip: Each file should be opened with the software that created it. Sometimes a simple text editor may show underlying data, but proper interpretation requires the specific application used for that file's design.
How to open a RET file
You need a suitable software like CaseWare IDEA to open a RET file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RET file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RET file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RET files:
- CaseWare IDEA
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RET files are often referred to as CaseWare IDEA data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Basic Realizer
- RETScreen (Project File) by RETScreen InternationalThe RETScreen International Clean Energy Project Analysis Software is a decision support tool developed with the contribution of numerous experts from government, industry, and academia. This file format is classified as Spreadsheet.
RET format details:
To view or edit RET files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the RET files:
An RET file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in RET files:
- 25% of all RET files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one RET file. RET files contain from 3 to 80 compressed files. Customary file names are MetaData.xml, lock.out, wkflow.xml and \Files\Coverpage.PDF. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 27 KB to 640 MB in size, with a median of 140 MB. The keywords NUCX, AuditSummary/AuditSummary.edi, AuditSummary/NU, AuditSummary\ and AuditSummary\AuditSu are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to limited, imovel, audit, bank and ifrs, and often contain personal information.
- 10% of all RET files start with the magic bytes 02RETORNO01COBRANCA, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 800 bytes to 54 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: COBRANCA, RETORNO, BRADESCO and BANCO. CB20180601.RET is a typical file name.
The remaining 65% of all RET files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. XML. Sometimes used for iedcbr, retornocef, kanpur or iedclt. If you want to find out what your RET file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a ret data container is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RET files
- Associate the RET file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data containers. Because only the current version supports the latest RET file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available CaseWare IDEA update.
- To make sure that your RET file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RET file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
