What is an RND file?

RND files mostly belong to Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) by Broadcom. An RND file is a random seed (number) which Endpoint Encryption (previously Pretty Good Privacy) uses as its session key for a given message. Another type of RND file is a random hash which VMware Workstation Player and PuTTY use to generate unique certificates. RND is also the filename extension of a CSV dataset or a TIFF image created by various programs.

How to open an RND file

You need a suitable software like Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) to open an RND file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. RND file format details:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. An RND file has no uniform or dominant file format. But the following two file formats are common:

15% of all RND files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "CSV " at the beginning. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. RND files are between 890 bytes and 4 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: Address, Start Time, Main, 100 Hz, 125 Hz, Frequency Weighting, Hz,20 Hz,25, Measurement Time,00d 00:00:10.0 and Time Weighting,F.
8% of all RND files are based on the popular TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The average file size is 460 KB with most files being between 180 KB and 680 KB in size.

How to solve problems with RND files

Associate the RND file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open random seeds. Because only the current version supports the latest RND file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Broadcom manufacturer website after an available Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) update.
To make sure that your RND file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
