What is an RTFD file?

RTFD files mostly belong to TextEdit by Apple. An RTFD file is a document saved as a Rich Text Format Directory. This is TextEdit's primary method of saving a document in Rich Text Format. Rich Text Format Directory is based on Rich Text Format. Unlike an RTF file which is a single text file, an RTFD file is actually an archive. The TXT.rtf file in the archive contains Rich Text formatting and commands which embed images and attachments in the RTFD file.

How to open RTFD files

You need a suitable software like TextEdit from Apple to open an RTFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RTFD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RTFD file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the RTFD files comes to the following conclusion:

The RTFD file extension is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in RTFD files:

• 45% of all RTFD files start with the bytes rtfd crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 180 KB in size and range from 11 KB to 2 MB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The keywords rtfd, __@PreferredName@__ and __@UTF8PreferredName@__ are typical for these files. Such files are related to resume and agreement.
• 35% of all RTFD files internally use the ZIP format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one RTFD file. An RTFD file includes 1 to 10 files. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. RTFD files are between 1 KB and 510 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. rtfd and rtfUT. Examples of file names are rich text with attachments (RTFD).rtfd. Files like these are about text, rich, attachments, list, contract, scheda, frasi, notes and prep.
