Opening a TBX File
The TBX file type is primarily associated with XTM Term Manager.
What is a TBX file?
TBX files come in several forms, each designed for a specific purpose.
FilExt.com tips: If you have an XML-based TBX file, you can view it with a text editor or XML viewer. For Microsoft Compound TBX files, use the appropriate GIS software. In cases where the file is encrypted, you should use the vendor's specialized application.
How to open a TBX file
You need a suitable software like XTM Term Manager to open a TBX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TBX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TBX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

TBX file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the TBX files comes to the following conclusion:
The TBX file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all TBX files belong to TermBase eXchange Format. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 25 KB to 38 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><martif type="TBX" xml:lang="en-US"><martifHeader><fileDesc><titleStmt><title>Microsoft Terminology Collection Export</title></titleStmt><sourceDesc><p>Microsoft. The file name MicrosoftTermCollection.tbx or IATE_export.tbx is typical for these files. Such TBX files store data about collection, microsoft, term, export, iate, voltage and lang.
- 20% of all TBX files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains several sections which are named like Contents, Version, Tool0 and Tool1. Most of these files are 4 KB to 700 KB in size. Examples of file names are Toolbox.tbx. Such files are related to tools.
All the rest of the TBX files (20%) have different formats, the following 4 formats can be found: RIFF. They are often associated with glossary or terminology. You can get all the details of your TBX file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .tbx file to analyze" above.
