Opening TMX Files
The TMX file type is primarily associated with Translation software.
What is a TMX file?
Primary use:
How to open TMX files
You need a suitable software like Translation software to open a TMX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TMX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TMX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TMX files:
- Translation software
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TMX files are often referred to as Translation software data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Translation Memory Export File Format by The Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA)TMX (Translation Memory eXchange) is the vendor-neutral open XML standard for the exchange of Translation Memory (TM) data created by Computer Aided Translation (CAT) and localization tools. This file format is classified as XML.
TMX file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the TMX files:
The TMX extension is very commonly found and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all TMX files belong to Translation Memory Exchange. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 1 KB to 8 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <tmx version="1.4">, o-tmf, creationtoolversion, segtype, adminlang, header creationtool, orientation, height and width. These files can be linked to translation, memory, level, english, mymemory, sample, docx, lokalise, omegat and room.
- 30% of all TMX files are based on the popular XML file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 3 KB and 11 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: creationtoolversion, <tmx version="1.4">, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, o-tmf, <header creationtool="SDL, Language Platform", SDL Language Platform, SDL TM8 Format, Format" datatype="xml" and segtype="sentence" adminl. Examples of file names are WD Drive Unlock.tmx. These files are attributed to export, unlock, drive, wfatm, schuremed, concl, enus and xlsx.
All other TMX files (10%) have different formats, often, for example, SQL, TMX and bxml. These files sometimes refer to master, project, data, engine, house, exhaust, website or spouse. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your TMX file!
Technical Data for TMX File Extension
a tmx XML-based file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TMX files
- Associate the TMX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open xml-based files. Because only the current version supports the latest TMX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Translation software update.
- To make sure that your TMX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TMX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
