What is a TMX file?

TMX files mostly belong to Translation software. TMX files are XML-based files that store pairs of source and target texts for translation projects.
Primary use:

Translation Memory Exchange: They allow translation tools to share translation units. Several tools like SDL Trados Studio, Memsource, OmegaT and others use these files, which can be encoded in UTF-8 or UTF-16.

XML Structure: The XML format makes it easy for different software to read, process, and update translation segments.

Secondary use:

Tiled Map Editor: A few TMX files are used by map editors for games, storing tile map data. This use is less common and related to tools like the Tiled Map Editor.

How to open TMX files

You need a suitable software like Translation software to open a TMX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TMX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TMX file directly in the browser:. 30% of all TMX files are based on the popular XML file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 3 KB and 11 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: creationtoolversion, <tmx version="1.4">, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, o-tmf, <header creationtool="SDL, Language Platform", SDL Language Platform, SDL TM8 Format, Format" datatype="xml" and segtype="sentence" adminl. Examples of file names are WD Drive Unlock.tmx. These files are attributed to export, unlock, drive, wfatm, schuremed, concl, enus and xlsx.
