What is a TCL file
How to open a TCL file
You need a suitable software like Tcl to open a TCL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TCL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TCL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

TCL format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the TCL files:
TCL is a very common file type and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in TCL files are:
- 15% of all TCL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "set" at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. TCL files can be up to 33 KB in size, but are often around 720 bytes - 2 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. open, set ns [new Simulator], nam w, tr w, ns trace-all, set nf, $ns namtrace-all $nf and node. A common filename is lab2.tcl or lab5.tcl. These files are attributed to prog, experiment, hybrid, code and csma.
- 9% of all TCL files have the same signature ######. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 7 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 35 KB. Files like these have the following tags: setup, design, report, clock, help and init.
All the rest of the TCL files (76%) have different formats, often, for example, shell script, Source, ZIP, Creat, puts, proc, set, cisco and XlxV. These files sometimes refer to script, polsarpro, biomass, edition, create or primetime. You can get all the details of your TCL file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .tcl file to view" above.

How to solve problems with TCL files
- Associate the TCL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest TCL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Tcl Developer Exchange manufacturer website after an available Tcl update.
- To make sure that your TCL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TCL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
