VTU file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the VTU files looks like this:
VTU is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 95% of all VTU files belong to ParaView VTK Unstructured grid. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 340 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The following keywords are characteristic: <VTKFile type="UnstructuredGrid", <UnstructuredGrid>, byte_order, LittleEndian, <?xml version="1.0"?>, NumberOfCells, Piece NumberOfPoints and <Points>. These files are often associated with solution, poisson, results, mesh, output, data, case and grid.
All other VTU files (5%) have no consistent format. Files like these are sometimes linked to model, pressure, velocity, step, internal, bracket, result, square, stress, cell or iter. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your VTU file!
