All about WCL Files
The WCL file type is primarily associated with WellCAD.
What is a WCL file
How can I open a WCL file?
You need a suitable software like WellCAD to open a WCL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WCL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WCL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert WCL files:
- WellCAD
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. WCL files are often referred to as WellCAD data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- WellCAD (Geological Log File) by Advanced Logic TechnologyDesktop solution for well data management and processing needs.
- WinCatalog (Document) by WinCatalog.comWinCatalog Light is a program for cataloging disks, folders and files. This is an older version extension for this program. This file format is classified as Database.
- WinCon (Controller Library File) by QuanserRuns real-time control models.
WCL file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the WCL files:
WCL is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all WCL files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 610 KB and 110 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. These files are attributed to summary and sonic.
- 15% of all WCL files start with the bytes 00 50 5F 30 31 5F, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 4 GB in size and range from 2 GB to 4 GB. The files contain the following words: P_01_00. An example of a file name is user1.wcl or init.wcl.
The remaining 30% of all WCL files are files with no common format, often, for example, XML. Just click the "Choose your .wcl file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your WCL file is.
Technical Data for WCL File Extension
a wcl composite log data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with WCL files
- Associate the WCL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open composite log data files. Because only the current version supports the latest WCL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available WellCAD update.
- To make sure that your WCL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WCL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
