Opening WCS Files
The WCS file type is primarily associated with Acronis/FITS Liberator.
What is a WCS file?
How can I open a WCS file?
You need a suitable software like Acronis/FITS Liberator to open a WCS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WCS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WCS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

WCS file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the WCS files:
WCS is rarely used as a file extension and covers a large number of different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in WCS files:
- 15% of all WCS files are based on the well-known XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 270 bytes in size and range from 260 bytes to 5 KB. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><ServiceExceptionReport version="1.2.0" > <ServiceException code="InvalidParameterValue" locator="bbox">, greater, illegal bbox and minX.
- 15% of all WCS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "WCXT6" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 65 KB to 2 MB. The keywords WCXT are typical for these files. These files can be linked to platinum.
All other WCS files (70%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats can be found: SIMPLE and CMP. If you want to find out which format your WCS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .wcs file to analyze".

How to solve problems with WCS files
- Associate the WCS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest WCS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Acronis/FITS Liberator update.
- To make sure that your WCS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WCS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
