Opening a WSD File
The WSD file type is primarily associated with PlantUML.
What is a WSD file?

How to open WSD files
You need a suitable software like PlantUML to open a WSD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WSD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WSD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

WSD file format:
To find out what program is needed to open WSD files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the WSD files comes to the following conclusion:
As a file extension, WSD isn't very common and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all WSD files have the same signature @startuml. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 600 bytes to 4 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. @startuml, participant and title. Such files are related to class, diagram, flow and data.
- 20% of all WSD files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 00. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 150 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. Such files sometimes refer to person-related data.
All other WSD files (45%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. WordStar for Windows document and CDataStruct. Tagged as payment, login or scan. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your WSD file!
Technical Data for WSD File Extension

How to solve problems with WSD files
- Associate the WSD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text-based diagrams. Because only the current version supports the latest WSD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PlantUML update.
- To make sure that your WSD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
