What is a WSD file?

WSD files mostly belong to PlantUML. A WSD file is not a single, uniform format but a set of files used by different applications. The most common use – some – is for PlantUML diagram files. These files contain text instructions that describe diagrams. With the right tool, such as the PlantUML renderer, the text is converted into visual diagrams.
Other uses include:

Wireless Site Design files that act as seed files for design work with programs like MicroStation.

Files that use an SQL structure to store Wireless Site Definition data. These are sometimes part of WSCAD Suite projects.

WordStar Document files, originating from WordStar for Windows, which are legacy document formats.

Wavemetrics Data files, holding scientific data used in specialized imaging or spectro applications.

Files with SCADA uses – such as Wind turbine SCADA and Weather Station Data files –, which store technical or process data and may be used in industrial or welding setups.

How to open WSD files

You need a suitable software like PlantUML to open a WSD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open WSD files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the WSD files comes to the following conclusion:

As a file extension, WSD isn't very common and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 35% of all WSD files have the same signature @startuml. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 600 bytes to 4 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. @startuml, participant and title. Such files are related to class, diagram, flow and data.
• 20% of all WSD files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 00. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 150 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. Such files sometimes refer to person-related data.
