Opening an XDC File
The XDC file type is primarily associated with Xilinx Vivado.
What is an XDC file?
The XDC file extension is not tied to one single use. In many cases, it is a design constraint file used in FPGA projects. These files list out hardware settings such as pin assignments and signal routes. They are typically simple text files that you can view with a text editor or a specialized tool like Xilinx Vivado.
For example, many XDC files come from Xilinx projects where they tell the design tool exactly how to assign FPGA pins. You can see more details on these types at the Digilent XDC GitHub.
Other XDC files come from design software like Adobe XD. In this case, the file is a packaged design document (often using ZIP compression) that contains vector layout data for UI/UX projects. Some versions use XML or even GZIP compression to store configuration or form details, as found in Adobe Acrobat DC settings or in tools like XDCtools.
Another infrequent use is for camera-related metadata, such as thumbnail images from digital cameras. How you open an XDC file will depend on its origin. If it appears to be a plain text file listing constraints, a text editor or FPGA tool should work. If it is compressed (ZIP or GZIP), you may need to decompress or use an XML editor for viewing the configuration details.
- FPGA Constraints: Plain text files defining pin assignments and other board configurations.
- Adobe XD Design Files: Compressed documents that hold UI/UX design data.
- XML Configuration Files: Files in XML or GZIP formats used for form data and settings.
- Camera Metadata: Rare files that may store thumbnail image details.
How do you open XDC files?
You need a suitable software like Xilinx Vivado to open an XDC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XDC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XDC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XDC files:
- Xilinx Vivado
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XDC files are often referred to as Xilinx Vivado settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Acrobat (Printer Description) by Adobe Systems IncorporatedAdobe Acrobat is a family of computer programs developed by Adobe Systems, designed to view, create, manipulate and manage files in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). Some software in the family are commercial, and some are free. Adobe Reader (formerly Acrobat Reader) is available as a no-charge download from Adobe's Web site, and allows the viewing and printing of PDF files. Acrobat and Reader are widely used as a way to present information with a fixed layout similar to a paper publication. An XDC file is a printer description in XML format. Adobe document services require this file to create the print files. PDF-based forms can only be printed on printers whose SAP device type have an XDC file in the system. This file format is classified as XML.
- DarkCrypTC (Encrypted File Container) by DarkSoftware (Alexander Myasnikov, Kolchugino)DarkCrypTC is a Total Commander wcx encryption plug-in. The encrypted container has a tag-based header; data can be encrypted by one of 50 symmetric algorithms, or an asymmetric RSA algorithm. First 7 bytes is the string for versions prior to III are DARKENC. Version III identifying characters are XDCNEXT. The Mime types used with this association are: application/xdc. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 58 44 43 4E 45 58 54, ASCII: XDCNEXT. This file format is classified as Archive.
XDC file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the XDC files:
The XDC extension is quite commonly used. The file itself includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all XDC files save the data in config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 19 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords ## - uncomment the lines corresponding to used pins, ## To use it in a project, ## - rename the used ports (in each line, after get_ports) a and ## This file is a general .xdc for the Basys3 rev B board are typical for these files. An example of a file name is Basys3_Master.xdc. These files can be linked to master, basys, nexys, constraints, blackboard, pynq, revd and arty.
- 10% of all XDC files use the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 43 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 170 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, APIVersion, <xdp:xdp xmlns:xdp="http://ns.adobe.com/xdp/">, <?xfa generator="XFA2_0", xdc name and http://www.xfa.org. The file name acrobat6.xdc is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: hppcl.
All other XDC files (60%) have no uniform format, the following 6 formats can be found: ZIP, GZIP, set and cxds. Often described as thumbnail, alawadhi, section, kria, zybo, eightbit, board or fpga. If you want to find out which format your XDC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xdc file to analyze".
Technical Data for XDC File Extension
an xdc configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XDC files
- Associate the XDC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest XDC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Xilinx Vivado update.
- To make sure that your XDC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XDC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
