Opening an XTG File
The XTG file type is primarily associated with QuarkXPress.
What is an XTG file?
How to open XTG files
You need a suitable software like QuarkXPress to open an XTG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XTG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XTG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XTG files:
- QuarkXPress
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XTG files are often referred to as QuarkXPress page layouts because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- QuarkXPress (Tags File) by Quark, Inc.QuarkXPress is layout software with a versatile interface so anyone can combine writing, editing, and typography with color and pictures to produce rich final output for print and Web. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 3C 76, ASCII: .v.
- TreeGraph 2 (TreeGraph 2) by BioInfWebTreeGraph is a phylogenetic trees graphical editor that focuses on graphical formats applications to tree elements. The XTG file stores global elements and attribute declarations as XML in this schema's target namespace. A phylogenetic tree, also referred to as evolutionary tree is a diagram representation of evolutionary relationships among biological species based on similarities and differences in physical and genetic attributes. This file format is classified as XML.
XTG format details:
To find out what program is needed to open XTG files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the XTG files:
XTG is rarely used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all XTG files are QuarkXPress Tags files. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. XTG files can be up to 340 KB in size, but are often around 450 bytes - 120 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <v1.60><e1>, @doc info:Source Pathname, @header:DOCUMENT, Destination Pathname and Last modified. These files are often associated with report.
- 20% of all XTG files save the data in UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 67 KB with most files being between 4 KB and 190 KB in size. The files contain the following words: <v1.60><e1>, Layout, @layout info:Source Path Name, Layout 1 and header.
All other XTG files (40%) have no uniform format, often e.g. eXtensible TreeGraph format and Normal. They are often associated with classifieds. If you want to find out what your XTG file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an xtg metadata file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XTG files
- Associate the XTG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open metadata files. Because only the current version supports the latest XTG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available QuarkXPress update.
- To make sure that your XTG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XTG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
