What is an ANI file?
How do you open ANI files?
You need a suitable software like Windows to open an ANI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ANI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ANI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ANI format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the ANI files:
The ANI file extension is quite widespread and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all ANI files are associated with Windows Animated Cursor files, which internally utilize the well-known RIFF format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 30 KB with most files being between 4 KB and 250 KB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as framicon, RIFF, ACONanih$ and LIST. These files are attributed to busy, select, aero, working, normal, cursor, arrow, background and link.
- 4% of all ANI files save the data in UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are often between 1 KB and 43 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CreatedDate, ModifiedDate, ProjectId, data, version:Version_9, OriginalProjectFilePath, null and RenderS. These files can be linked to movie and video.
All other ANI files (31%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Atomic Bomberman Animation, DK Multimedia Animation, Eternity Engine Animation, ANI and CLAW. Often described as alternate, starting, wait, attack, diagonal, electric, resize or help. If you want to find out what your ANI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
