What is a CAN file?

CAN files mostly belong to WinZip. CAN files are used for different purposes and do not follow a single standard. They may hold compressed survey data in a ZIP format, which means the file is essentially a zipped CSV file. You can open this type with ZIP utilities such as WinZip.
For some cases, the file is a CAPL script used in CAN network analysis. This script is meant to work with CAN tools like CANoe from Vector. More details are available on the Vector website.
Some CAN files are Photoshop Canvas files using the PSD format. These are images that you can open with Adobe Photoshop.
Other files with the CAN extension are CAN bus log files that record messages from a CAN bus network. Such log files are produced by tools like Microchip CAN BUS Analyzer (Microchip) or Vector CANalyzer.
A few instances show CAN files being used as CFX animation files from ANSYS CFX for simulation animations.

Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. 10% of all CAN files start with the bytes /*@!Encoding: crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 5 KB in size and range from 500 bytes to 43 KB. The keywords /*@!Encoding:1252*/, variables, includes and message are typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: capl and config.
