Opening CAN Files

The CAN file type is primarily associated with WinZip.

CANFile Extension CAN
File extension: CAN
File type:  multi-purpose file container

What is a CAN file?

CAN files mostly belong to WinZip. CAN files are used for different purposes and do not follow a single standard. They may hold compressed survey data in a ZIP format, which means the file is essentially a zipped CSV file. You can open this type with ZIP utilities such as WinZip.
For some cases, the file is a CAPL script used in CAN network analysis. This script is meant to work with CAN tools like CANoe from Vector. More details are available on the Vector website.
Some CAN files are Photoshop Canvas files using the PSD format. These are images that you can open with Adobe Photoshop.
Other files with the CAN extension are CAN bus log files that record messages from a CAN bus network. Such log files are produced by tools like Microchip CAN BUS Analyzer (Microchip) or Vector CANalyzer.
A few instances show CAN files being used as CFX animation files from ANSYS CFX for simulation animations.
FilExt.com tip: If you are unsure which type you have, examine its structure and try opening it with a related application. This approach helps determine whether the file needs a compression tool, a script editor, an image viewer, or a CAN bus analysis program.

How to open CAN files

You need a suitable software like WinZip to open a CAN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CAN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CAN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  1. WinZip
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CAN files are often referred to as WinZip compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. .Can Encryptor/Decryptor
.Can is a way of encrypting your files, so they can not be viewed or accessed without decanning them. They can either just be canned or cancoded. The cancode is a 5 digit code that can be entered before canning and then has to be entered again when decanning. It's been reported that if the file has not been coded that a simple rename to the original file name will allow the file to be opened by the appropriate archive program (e.g., RAR, ZIP, etc.). This file format is classified as Archive.

CAN format details:

To find out what program is needed to open CAN files, you need to determine the file format. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the CAN files:

The CAN file extension is quite common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:

All other CAN files (45%) have no uniform format, the following 5 formats can be found: Source and PSD. These files sometimes refer to data, ydeg, canbus or read. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your CAN file!
