Opening a CDS File
The CDS file type is primarily associated with Delphi.
What is a CDS file?
Note: The CDS file extension does not refer to one single format. Its purpose and functionality depend on the originating application and field. Below are several distinct uses:
- Delphi Database Table Definition:
some of CDS files define database table structures for Delphi. These files, sometimes called the CDESK Database Table Structure, hold schema information used by the Delphi programming language. For more details, see the Delphi website. - Coding DNA Sequence:
A 6% share of CDS files store coding DNA sequence information. They are used in bioinformatics analysis with tools such as NCBI BLAST to study genetic data. - ChemDraw Style Sheet:
some serve as style sheet documents for ChemDraw, defining graphical styles within chemical structure drawings. - Compressed Data Storage:
some are ZIP-based containers used by applications (such as ConceptDraw PRO) to bundle documents or project data. - SQLite Database File:
A small portion uses an SQL format to store data in a lightweight database, often seen in ChemStation Data Files. - Contract and Credit Files:
Some CDS files serve as contract definition language files for systems like IBM Cloud Pak for Data or as Credit Decision System files viewed by specialized tools. - Vehicle Diagnostic Data:
Other instances include LXH data streams and Mercedes-Benz diagnostic files that record calibration and vehicle diagnostic information. The Mercedes-related files, for example, are used with XENTRY/DAS tools (Mercedes-Benz). - XML-Based Data Packet and Firmware Updates:
A few CDS files hold XML packets (used by CDS/ISIS systems) or even firmware updates for car stereo systems (managed by tools like the JVC KENWOOD Car Navigation Update Tool, see Kenwood).
FilExt.com note: This diverse usage means that to open and view an CDS file you need to know its source: whether it is a Delphi project element, a bioinformatics sequence, a ChemDraw style document, or part of a diagnostic/firmware system. Checking the file’s metadata or header often reveals its origin.
How to open a CDS file
You need a suitable software like Delphi to open a CDS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CDS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CDS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CDS files:
- Delphi
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CDS files are often referred to as Delphi databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ChemDraw Stationery Document
- Delphi (TClientDataset Data) by Borland Software CorporationUsed to store data from a TClientDataset (an in-memory table available within the Delphi language).
- TrialDirector (Input File) by inData CorporationTrialDirectorTM is inData’s leading-edge trial presentation software. With TrialDirector, you can view, manage, search, and prepare case exhibits and depositions, and then orchestrate them into a compelling trial presentation. Indexing tools allow you to organize and annotate information by client, issue, witness, or any other logical criteria, then easily stage the information for presentation during trial. The Presentation mode enables you to blend drawings, photos, text, and videos with the ease of a Hollywood director, and lets you adjust, annotate, or amplify in the courtroom. iCONECT will generate a TrialDirector CDS import file based on the criteria you have specified.
- United States Postal ServiceComputerized Delivery Sequence (CDS) is a service provided by the United States Postal Service that provides updated delivery sequence information to customers with qualified address lists. CDS Conversion Software allows CDS customers to decrypt their CDS files. Related links: CDS Conversion Software Manual (PDF), CDS Conversion Software
CDS file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the CDS files:
The CDS file extension is quite common and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all CDS files are associated with Borland Client Dataset data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 310 bytes to 650 KB in size, with a median of 12 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords WIDTH are typical for these files. Files like these are about images, data, week, protocols, formuli, custom, datenbank, aangifte, events, excel, users, arch, bill and form.
- 7% of all CDS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters ">lcl|1:" at the beginning. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 250 bytes to 29 KB in size. The file name ORF1.cds or ORF2 (2).cds is typical for these files.
All other CDS files (43%) have no uniform format, often, for example, ZIP, SQL, certificate, VjCD, Users, github and CFHD. These files are often connected to contract, voter, info, stylesheet, chemdraw, properties or static. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your CDS file!
Technical Data for CDS File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\COMMON~1\INDATA~1\inMime5.exe %1
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\CambridgeSoft\ChemOffice2005\ChemDraw\ChemDraw.exe /DDE
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\CambridgeSoft\ChemOffice2008\ChemDraw\ChemDraw.exe
a cds data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CDS files
- Associate the CDS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest CDS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Delphi update.
- To make sure that your CDS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CDS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
