What is an FW file?

FW files mostly belong to Firmware Tools. FW files are firmware files used to update or install code on hardware devices.
This file format is not meant to be opened like a text file. It contains binary data that a device or upgrade tool uses to install new firmware. Examples include:

Firmware image files used with the MediaTek Firmware Upgrade Tool.

Firmware update files used by ACTIONSFW and similar DFU tools.

Firmware update packages that update routers or embedded systems (for details, see Gadgetbridge).

Some FW files are delivered as compressed packages using ZIP or GZIP formats. They are built for specific hardware and must be applied with the proper upgrade tool.

How to open an FW file

You need a suitable software like Firmware Tools to open an FW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FW file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the FW files produces the following result:

The FW file extension is quite common and does not have a uniform file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 10% of all FW files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 99 AA BB CC DD EE FF 75" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 8 MB and 60 MB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. The files contain the following words: "3DUfw. The file name RUIZU X02 Firmware V1.0.fw is typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: firmware, ruizu, bluetooth, logo, mechen, flash and card.
• 6% of all FW files start with the bytes 100TMFWFSTCA crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 14 MB in size and range from 5 MB to 20 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as 100TMFWFSTCA, ACTIONSFW, ACTS-FWT001 and FMT001. The file name A3161_Soundcore Flare V2.52-20180601.FW or Mifa_WildBox_TWS_V2.11.fw is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to soundcore, mifa, wild, flare, uboom, oluv and xycf.

All other FW files (84%) have no uniform format, the following 30 formats exist: Kodak Camera Firmware, Forgotten Worlds custom music format, ZIP, GZIP, zlib, wfsa, XAgD, SEGGER, OBi, ACTTEST, LENGTH and RHIR.
