What is an ICL file

ICL files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. An ICL file is an icon library used by Windows operating system. It contains multiple versions of the same icon saved in Dynamic Link Library (DLL) format with different resolutions and color depths. Images saved in icon libraries are used as file, folder, or application icons. Programs like IconPackager and IconWorkshop can create an ICL icon library. Another type of ICL file contains source code written in Clean programming language.

How to open ICL files

You need a suitable software like Windows to open an ICL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ICL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ICL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  3. IconWorkshop (icon library) by Axialis

ICL file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the ICL files is as follows:

ICL is one of the most common file extensions and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other ICL files (15%) have different formats, often e.g. DGUS, CTXICL and module. The category is coloured, everyday, sample, system, bebox or black. If you want to find out which format your ICL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .icl file to view this image".

an icl icon library is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with ICL files

  • Associate the ICL file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open icon librarys. Because only the current version supports the latest ICL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows update.
  • To make sure that your ICL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ICL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
