All about ICL Files
The ICL file type is primarily associated with Windows.
What is an ICL file
How to open ICL files
You need a suitable software like Windows to open an ICL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ICL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ICL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Windows by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ICL files are often referred to as Windows systems because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Clean (source code) by Software Technology Research GroupClean is a functional programming environment and general purpose language. Scripts and program source code written in Clean is saved in an ICL file. This file format is classified as Developer.
- IconWorkshop (icon library) by AxialisIconWorkshop is a desktop application for creating application, file, and folder icons to be used on Windows operating system. It saves an icon library in an ICL file. This file format is classified as System.
ICL file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the ICL files is as follows:
ICL is one of the most common file extensions and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all ICL files are Icons Library files, which are based on the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 700 KB in size and range from 27 KB to 3 MB. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. The keywords IMNE are typical for these files. A usual file name is windowsxp.icl or Win98.icl. Files like these are sometimes connected to icons, icon, colors, library, windows, folders, irondevil and misc.
- 30% of all ICL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 00 50 30 31" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 200 KB in size and range from 66 KB to 850 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as PHPHP and NPCHC. Such files sometimes refer to bank.
All other ICL files (15%) have different formats, often e.g. DGUS, CTXICL and module. The category is coloured, everyday, sample, system, bebox or black. If you want to find out which format your ICL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .icl file to view this image".

How to solve problems with ICL files
- Associate the ICL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open icon librarys. Because only the current version supports the latest ICL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows update.
- To make sure that your ICL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ICL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
