What is an ID file?

ID files mostly belong to Notes by HCL. An ID file contains user identification data used by Notes email client application. Another type of ID file contains information which Solidworks uses to verify the version of a download. ID is also the filename extension of an index file which MapInfo uses to verify the version of a download. SuperMap GIS 9D geographic information system saves its license in an ID file. SimCity 4 city-building video game saves information about the location of audio clips in an ID file. Pegasus Mail email software saves the long name of a folder in a text-encoded ID file.

How to open ID files

You need a suitable software like Notes to open an ID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ID file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ID file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Our examination of the ID files comes to the following conclusion:

The ID extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other ID files (41%) have different formats, frequently e.g. InterActual Disc, GZIP, GIF, XML and Solid. Often described as machine, disc, insight, cert, jtaxrbbwua, secure, data or gene. How to solve problems with ID files

  • Associate the ID file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open user identifications. Because only the current version supports the latest ID file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the HCL manufacturer website after an available Notes update.
  • To make sure that your ID file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ID file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
