Opening LET Files
The LET file type is primarily associated with Microsoft Word.
What is a LET file
For example, one type uses the Microsoft Compound format to hold a Microsoft Word letter template. This file stores preset text and formatting so that users can quickly generate letters. You can find more details on this at Microsoft Create.
Another common variation is the WordPerfect format. Here the LET file acts as a WordPerfect letter document, prearranging the layout and style of a letter. More information is available at WordPerfect.
Other LET files include formats used for ALS Prolog letter files (and encrypted AutoCAD linetype information), as well as label editor templates used in layout design (such as a QuarkXPress layout template, see QuickReport). They may also store data like loudspeaker equalization set up for SPICE simulation output.
FilExt.com notes: If you have a LET file, open it with the software it was created in. If it does not open correctly, check the file header with a text or hex editor to identify its internal structure. This will help you choose the correct application to view or edit the content.
How can I open a LET file?
You need a suitable software like Microsoft Word to open a LET file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LET file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LET file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

LET file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the LET files looks like this:
The LET file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in LET files are:
- 40% of all LET files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". LET files contain an app name Microsoft Word. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 638bf720-4ff6-11cf-bd26-8792ae4fd69c or 00020900-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains sections Contents and PMW Document. The average file size is 43 KB with most files being between 7 KB and 250 KB in size. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago. Files like these are sometimes connected to letter, letterhead and head, and usually contain person-related data.
- 20% of all LET files are based on the popular WordPerfect file format. WordPerfect is a word processor now owned by Corel and has a long history that began in the 1980s. It may contain formatted text, tables, charts, drawn objects, and images. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 1 KB to 13 KB in size, with a median of 5 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Courier.
All the rest of the LET files (40%) have different formats. They are often associated with mail. Just click the "Choose your .let file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your LET file is.

a let template file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with LET files
- Associate the LET file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open template files. Because only the current version supports the latest LET file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microsoft Word update.
- To make sure that your LET file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LET file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
