What is an LWD file?

LWD files mostly belong to LabVIEW. LWD files are used in specialized industries and come in several formats. The largest group is a directional drilling data file. This type, sometimes called a DCI-F5-DLG data file, stores wellbore trajectory and sensor information for drilling operations.

Directional Drilling Data: Contains logs and measurements used to track drilling direction.

Another group of LWD files is the LabVIEW diagram file, which holds block diagrams and wiring information created with National Instruments LabVIEW. These files are also known as LogiKal CAD files. For more details, see the NI website.

LabVIEW Diagram: Stores system design details and diagrammatic representations for data acquisition.

A smaller group are the LiveModel files, used as process model data files in simulation environments such as AllFusion Process Modeler. These files may also be referred to as LogiTerm Wizard Data files. Additional insights are available at the BMC page.

LiveModel Data: Contains data for process simulation and model tracking.

How to open LWD files

You need a suitable software like LabVIEW to open an LWD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LWD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LWD file directly in the browser:.
