All about LVM Files
The LVM file type is primarily associated with LabVIEW.
What is an LVM file?
- Main Use: LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench) is a graphical programming platform used in the development of testing, measuring, and control-type applications with the help of instrument hardware. LVM files are used by LabVIEW to store measurement related data. LVM files are made up of one-dimensional data that are capable of storing medium-sized data sets. The data in the LVM files are stored in an ASCII format using rows and columns. Every line saves tab-delimited or common-delimited data along with an identifier tag. This method of data storage is similar to the way in which CSV and TSV files save information. LVM files can also output saved data using the Write to Measurement File function in LabVIEW. LVM files can also accept input using the Read From Measurement File function in LabVIEW. TDMS files can also be used for this purpose.
- Adoption: LVM files can be opened and modified using the LabVIEW application in Windows, macOS, and Linux based systems.
How do you open LVM files?
You need a suitable software like LabVIEW from National Instruments to open an LVM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LVM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LVM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to extract texts from LVM files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...
You can extract texts from LVM file or capture a preview screenshot using our online LVM file viewer:- Just click the "Choose your .lvm file to view" button on this page.
- Your LVM file will then be displayed in the browser.
- Now click on "Save as..." at the top of the page.
- Then choose the file format (e.g. JPG, PDF, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
- Your file will be converted and downloaded.
LVM file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the LVM files produces the following result:
LVM is a very common file type and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 65% of all LVM files are LabVIEW Measurement files. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 35 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. LabVIEW Measurement, Reader_Version, Multi_Headings, Separator, Time_Pref, Writer_Version, X_Columns, Operator, Date, Decimal_Separator, Absolute and Relative. Files like these have the following tags: load, disp, data, niob, composite, lifetime, group, design and team.
- 15% of all LVM files have the same signature 0.00. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 5 KB to 850 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: 0.000000. These files can be linked to line, cylinder, probe, measurments, temperature, verification, emissions, pressure, faraday, bottom, model, noise, beam and mass.
The remaining 20% of all LVM files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, Time and Number. These files are often connected to pomiar, kalorimetrie, ungrounded, results, backup, thermo, wasser, trial, lvdt, sine, temp or time. Just click the "Choose your .lvm file to view" button on this page to find out what your LVM file is.
Technical Data for LVM File Extension
an lvm LabVIEW measurement file is a special file format by National Instruments and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with LVM files
- Associate the LVM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open labview measurement files. Because only the current version supports the latest LVM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the National Instruments manufacturer website after an available LabVIEW update.
- To make sure that your LVM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LVM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
