M3D file format:
To find out what program is needed to open M3D files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the M3D files:
The M3D file extension is quite common and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in M3D files are:
- 30% of all M3D files are based on the zip format, the M3D file contains a number of compressed files. Primarily 5 to 7 files are included. Customary file names are Contents, FileInfo, MetaInfo, MetaProductInfo, Preview and SysInfo. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 59 KB to 3 MB. The keywords AppName, FileInfo, [FileInfo] and AppVersion=KOMPA are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to model and detal.
- 20% of all M3D files use the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 51 KB and 100 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. The file name Mssa3d.m3d or Mssrsx.m3d is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to mssa, msseax, mssds, mssfast, mssdolby and mssdx.
All the rest of the M3D files (50%) have different formats, the following 9 formats exist: DOC, Mad and File. Sometimes used for pole, table, downlight, msssoft, double, single, asset or dface. If you want to find out which format your M3D file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .m3d file to analyze".

How to solve problems with M3D files
- Associate the M3D file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d furniture objects. Because only the current version supports the latest M3D file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the DIAL manufacturer website after an available DIALux update.
