What is a MON file

MON files mostly belong to Data Logger/Archive Manager. MON files serve various roles depending on the system that created them. They are not limited to a single purpose and can store different types of data.

Data Logger Files: Often used to record data from sensors or equipment. These files record monitoring data and can be opened with a data logging tool.

Compressed Archives: Some MON files use the ZIP format. In this case the file may bundle data (for example, an email folder from Outlook Express). You can open these files with an archive manager such as WinRAR.

Video Files: Other MON files contain video data from mobile DVR systems.

Weather and Report Data: Certain files keep monthly weather records or ship performance reports.

How do you open MON files?

You need a suitable software like Data Logger/Archive Manager to open a MON file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MON file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. The MON file type has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 10% of all MON files start with the magic bytes Data file for , which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. MON files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 10 KB - 610 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: ============, DATE, TIME, Data file for DataLogger, COMPANY   : <Company name> and COMP.STATUS: Do.
• 10% of all MON files use the ZIP format, i.e. a MON file contains several compressed files. Most often they are 1 to 100 compressed files. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are 400 KB to 40 MB in size, with a median of 3 MB. Such MON files store data about export.
