What is an NDF file

NDF files mostly belong to SQL Server by Microsoft. An NDF file is a secondary database created by SQL Server relational database management system. An NDF file is created when the main database file becomes too large for a disk on which it is stored. For this reason, a secondary database is saved on a separate disk. A database admin can manually create an NDF file to distribute data between a primary and secondary database. Both files have the same base name. How to open an NDF file

You need a suitable software like SQL Server to open an NDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly.
