Opening an NDF File
The NDF file type is primarily associated with SQL Server.
What is an NDF file
How to open an NDF file
You need a suitable software like SQL Server to open an NDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NDF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NDF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NDF files:
- SQL Server by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NDF files are often referred to as SQL Server databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Capture NX-D (raw image reference photo) by NikonCapture NX-D is a computer program for processing and editing raw images captured with Nikon digital cameras. It can import and read an NDF file containing a blank reference photo for a raw image captured by a Nikon camera. This file format is classified as Camera Raw. - ESET Smart Security (quarantine data) by ESETESET Smart Security is a Windows program that protects the system from malware, spyware, an ransomware. It stores quarantined data in an NDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- NeoPlanet (data) by NeoPlanetNeoPlanet is a discontinued plug-out extension for Internet Explorer which provided additional email, chat, and browsing capabilities. It used some data saved in an NDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Network Detective (network scan result) by RapidFire ToolsNetwork Detective is a computer network vulnerability assessment, monitoring, and configuration program. A network scan result generated by Network Detective is saved in a ZIP-compressed NDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- NimbleScan (custom microarray design) by NimbleGenNimbleScan is a software suite used to place specific grids on NimbleGen array images and extract their feature intensity raw values. Custom microarray designs used by NimbleScan are saved in an NDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
- ProWORX (short comment) by Schneider ElectricProWORX is an integrated development environment used to program, configure, and debug Modicon programmable logic controllers. A short comment created with ProWORX is saved in an NDF file. This file format is classified as Data.
NDF format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the NDF files looks like this:
The NDF file extension is used very often and does not have a uniform file format. The file formats most commonly found in NDF files are:
- 15% of all NDF files start with the magic bytes D1 02, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 16 KB to 210 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The keywords Speed, CAnemometer, Maximum and Thies are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are 01-00001.NDF or 01-00003.NDF.
- 10% of all NDF files are based on the well-known PNG file format. PNG is short for Portable Network Graphics. It is a high-quality raster image file that supports lossless data compression. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 120 KB with most files being between 41 KB and 510 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: IHDR, profile and IDATx^. A usual file name is 1596037894446_211.ndf or 1606704054593_40.ndf.
The remaining 75% of all NDF files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. Channel Data File, ESET Smart Security Quarantine Data, ZIP, JPG, Source, ftyp, htm, DTLG, xrCV and export. Tagged as detective, network, local, faces, wall, verification, face or list. You can get all the details of your NDF file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .ndf file to analyze" above.

an ndf secondary datatabase is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NDF files
- Associate the NDF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open secondary datatabases. Because only the current version supports the latest NDF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available SQL Server update.
- To make sure that your NDF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NDF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
