Opening an NDX File
The NDX file type is primarily associated with dBase.
What is an NDX file?
- Main Use: dBASE is a proprietary microcomputer database management system(DBMS) that is compatible with Windows systems. It is used to create Windows applications and Web applications that can be hosted on Windows servers. In dBASE, NDX files are used as index files that define the structure and fields of a database and help in quick searching. Each NDX index file consists of a root, branch, and leaf nodes. NDX stands for dBASE non-maintained iNDeX file, as the dBASE application does not update the index automatically when they are modified. Besides dBASE, NDX file format can also be associated with other database management systems on Windows PCs such as Microsoft Visual FoxPro.
- Other Uses: NDX files are also used by Neat, a digital document organizing software compatible with Windows and macOS systems, to archive documents like receipts or recipes. NDX files can be used to share data with other users of the program. NDX files are also associated with ArcView, a GIS software application meant for the visualization and analysis of geographic data. The NDX file consists of font index information used for storing the GIS data in databases. The NDX file is also associated with the IBM Rational XDE (Extended Development Environment) application to store information used internally by the program.
How do you open NDX files?
You need a suitable software like dBase to open an NDX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NDX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NDX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NDX file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the NDX files:
The NDX extension is quite commonly used. The file itself includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all NDX files start with the bytes PCS crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 4 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 28 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such NDX files store data about client, facture, utilisateur, fichier, dcptrn, ligne, table and user.
- 2% of all NDX files use the ZIP format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one NDX file. Primarily 1 to 50 files are included. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. NDX files can be up to 88 MB in size, but are often around 70 KB - 11 MB.
All the rest of the NDX files (38%) have different formats. Sometimes used for whatsapp, article, licence, garage, gpwutilisateur, utilisateurs, activation, produits, clients, patient, produit, ajaids, bareme, detail, master, phrase, ticket, index, login, users, base or list. an ndx database index file is a special file format by dBase and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NDX files
- Associate the NDX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database index files. Because only the current version supports the latest NDX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the dBase manufacturer website after an available dBase update.
- To make sure that your NDX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NDX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
