What is an OTM file?
How to open OTM files
You need a suitable software like Outlook to open an OTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OTM file directly in the browser:. OTM file format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the OTM files comes to the following conclusion:
The OTM file extension is not common and is primarily used by a single program. The following file formats are most commonly found in OTM files:
- 65% of all OTM files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The file contains sections OutlookProjectData, OutlookVbaData and DigitalSignature. OTM files can be up to 8 MB in size, but are often around 32 KB - 680 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. A usual file name is VbaProject.OTM.
- 7% of all OTM files internally utilize the JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 600 bytes. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as "origin_app": "default", buffer_type, noun, target_id, {"selection_areas": [{"layer", "none", "targetId" and POINT. Such OTM files store data about settings.
The remaining 28% of all OTM files are different files with different signatures. They are often associated with bing or maps. Just click the "Choose your .otm file to view" button on this page to find out what your OTM file is.
