What is a PRT file?

PRT files mostly belong to SolidWorks by Dassault Systèmes. A PRT file usually contains a 3D product model created with computer-aided design/manufacturing programs such as NX, Creo, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, CATIA, and Fusion 360. Despite using the PRT filename extension, part models are usually saved in a format proprietary to the program used to create them. NX, for example saves a PRT file in Compound Document format. Another type of PRT file contains formatting information for a print job on some Linux-based systems. PRT is also the filename extension of a data file used by W32/Parrot-A malware. BrainVoyager saves a description of experimental conditions in a PRT (protocol) file.

How to open a PRT file

You need a suitable software like SolidWorks to open a PRT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PRT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PRT file directly in the browser:. PRT file format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the PRT files produces the following result:

PRT is one of the most common file extensions and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

40% of all PRT files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏà¡±á (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). There is also a globally unique identifier b3c91e61-60fa-11d1-8ad9-0800362fb302 or 2048c478-0003-0000-dce2-3d2002000000. The internal containers are called UG_PART, qafmetadata, part and images. A typical file size is 1 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. Such PRT files store data about assembly, model, complete, cover and ring.
20% of all PRT files start with the bytes SPLMSSTR, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 110 KB and 8 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as /Root/FastLoad/, /Root/a, HEADER, SPLMSSTR, /Root/images/, /Root/part/, /Root/UG_PART/ and /Root/DFA/. These files are often associated with drawing.

All other PRT files (40%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Pro/ENGINEER parts, MegaCAD Project, ZIP and BOXSCORE. The category is invoice, layout, bracket, data, profit, ahjam or base.
