Opening a PSF File

The PSF file type is primarily associated with Adobe Photoshop.

PSFFile Extension PSF
File extension: PSF
File type:  versatile file

What is a PSF file?

PSF files mostly belong to Adobe Photoshop. PSF files are not a single file type but a label for several file formats.
For many users, a Photoshop image file is the most familiar form. This variant stores image data in a raster format that is understood by Adobe Photoshop.
Other applications use the PSF extension for different functions, for example:
  • Pro Trader Strategy File – A file that contains trading strategies and is often built on a ZIP-based structure to bundle data.
  • Protein Structure File – A file used in scientific work to record the structure of proteins, processed by tools like PSF Extractor.
  • CCTV Video File – A format used by surveillance systems, typically opened with software such as Panasonic Security Viewer. More details can be found at Panasonic Global.
  • Parameter Settings File – A configuration file stored in a Microsoft Compound format, used by programs like Xcalibur.
  • Proportional Spacing Font File – A font file used for screen displays, managed by tools such as the PC Screen Font Utility. Refer to this page for further information.
  • FilExt.com tip: Each implementation preserves its own data structure and must be opened with the proper application associated with its purpose.

How can I open a PSF file?

You need a suitable software like Adobe Photoshop to open a PSF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PSF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PSF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PSF files:

    1. Adobe Photoshop
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PSF files are often referred to as Adobe Photoshop raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. ChiWriter
ChiWriter is a scientific multifont word processor. It was developed and, until 1995, commercially distributed by Horstmann Software Development Corporation, USA. It was designed to work in an MS-DOS environment, though it can also be launched from an icon under Windows 3.xx or Windows 95. It creates its own graphic screen, and some of the resolutions offer mouse support. However, the lack of true Windows support probably led to the downfall of ChiWriter. Since 1995 Horstmann is out of business, and all support for ChiWriter has stopped.
    3. Eclipse (Project Set File) by The Eclipse Foundation
Eclipse is an open source community whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes for building, deploying and managing software across the lifecycle. Your workspace setup may consist of several projects from one or more repositories. Once you have setup your workspace, you can share it with others by exporting a Team Project Set. A project set is a text file that contains a pointer to each of the projects contained in the project set. When a project set is imported, these pointers are used to fetch the projects from the repository. Project sets can include any projects that are mapped to repository tooling that provides support for them, such as CVS. This file format is classified as Text. Related links: Working With a PSF File
    4. HP-UX Software Distributor (Product Specification File) by Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
Software Distributor (SD) is the HP-UX administration tool set used to deliver and maintain HP-UX operating systems and layered software applications. SD is delivered as part of HP-UX; you do not need to download it separately.
    5. Insight II (X-PLOR Molecular Structure File) by Accelrys Software Inc.
Insight II is a molecular modeling environment that provides a graphical interface to algorithms for molecular dynamics, homology modeling, de novo design, and electrostatics.
    6. MicroStation (Plot Specification) by Bentley Systems, Incorporated
MicroStation is used by teams of architects, engineers, contractors and GIS professionals for work on buildings, civil engineering projects, power plants and geospatial information. This file format is classified as CAD/CAM.
    7. Photoshop (Proof Setup) by Adobe Systems Incorporated

    9. Playstation (Sound Format) by Sony Corporation of America
The PSF format brings the functionality of NSF, SID, SPC, and GBS to the Playstation. PSF uses the original music driver code from each game to replay sequenced music. A PSF file contains three basic parts: (1) A reserved section, which is unused for now. (2) A zlib-compressed Playstation EXE file. When executed on an actual console, this EXE would simply play the music. (3) An ASCII tag containing the title, length, and other relevant information. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex:, ASCII: PSF. Related links: Highly Experimental WinAmp Plug-in, File Format, PSF Players Listing, Zophar's Domain PSF Archive

    PSF file format details:

To find out what program is needed to open PSF files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the PSF files:

The PSF file type includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in PSF files:

All other PSF files (50%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats exist: Protein Structure File, Linux PC Screen Font data and PAVS. The category is great, britain, city, austria, about, model, south, title or card. If you want to find out which format your PSF file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .psf file to view this image".

a psf versatile file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PSF files

    • Associate the PSF file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open versatile files. Because only the current version supports the latest PSF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Adobe Photoshop update.
    • To make sure that your PSF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
