Opening STG Files
The STG file type is primarily associated with ActiveSync.
What is an STG file?
How to open STG files
You need a suitable software like ActiveSync to open an STG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your STG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a STG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert STG files:
- ActiveSync by Microsoft Corporation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. STG files are often referred to as ActiveSync backups because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- SNMP Traffic Grapher
- Visual Pinball High Scores
STG file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the STG files comes to the following conclusion:
The STG file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all STG files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). STG files contain an app name STATISTICA or Statistica. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: c9e28004-3d45-11d4-9ff4-00c04fa0d540. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 5 KB and 3 MB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. The file name Actions.stg or Backup.stg is characteristic of these files. These files are often associated with workspaces, templates, laconfig, members, point, saved and proc.
- 10% of all STG files start with the magic bytes 04 03 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. STG files are between 800 bytes and 7 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as *.htm. These files are attributed to color, raidan, teste, macd and robo.
All other STG files (75%) have no consistent format, often e.g. ZIP, UTF-16 (LE), Usu, Advanced, stg, OBJECT, LuaQ and STGR. Tagged as level, medias, sort, rodnei, fusion, email, cris, ddil or item. If you want to find out which format your STG file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .stg file to analyze".

an stg data backup file is a special file format by Microsoft Corporation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with STG files
- Associate the STG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data backup files. Because only the current version supports the latest STG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft Corporation manufacturer website after an available ActiveSync update.
- To make sure that your STG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .STG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
