Opening SM2 Files
The SM2 file type is primarily associated with Samsung SmartSSD.
What is an SM2 file?
If the file comes from another source it may have a different role:
- Strain Measurement Data: Files from StrainSmart2 store strain gauge readings for engineering tests and material monitoring. They work with software from SPM Instrument's Condmaster Ruby.
- Engine Control Data: Files from ScanMaster-2 capture engine sensor data for automotive diagnostics. Use the corresponding ScanMaster software (linked with SMS-Diagnose) to view these details. More information is available at the related webpage.
FilExt.com notes: Each SM2 file holds measurement logs in its own proprietary format. To open and view the file, use the software specific to its source. A simple text editor might show raw data but not the full interpretation.
How can I open an SM2 file?
You need a suitable software like Samsung SmartSSD to open an SM2 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SM2 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SM2 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SM2 files:
- Samsung SmartSSD
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SM2 files are often referred to as Samsung SmartSSD data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- SediMeter (Field Data File) by Lindorm, Inc.SediMeter is an environmental monitoring instrument for sedimentation, erosion, siltation, scour, and transport. Field data files are created on a SD/MMC card by the LogDator logger in the field. These files are in a binary format read by the SediMeter software. Related links: Lindorm Downloads

SM2 file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the SM2 files:
An SM2 file is primarily used by a single program. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 70% of all SM2 files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "01 00 01" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. SM2 files can be up to 8 MB in size, but are often around 4 MB - 8 MB. The file type was created recently. These files are often associated with health.
- 6% of all SM2 files start with the magic bytes 01 02 03, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 290 KB in size and range from 30 KB to 1 MB.
All other SM2 files (24%) have no consistent format, often, for example, SMFS. Often described as smart, splash or fifa. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SM2 file!
Technical Data for SM2 File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\SAS612\CORE\SASEXE\SASOACT.EXE action
an sm2 data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SM2 files
- Associate the SM2 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SM2 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Samsung SmartSSD update.
- To make sure that your SM2 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
