What is an SR file?

SR files mostly belong to dcm4che-tool. The SR file extension is used for storing structured data in several fields.
One common type is the DICOM Structured Report used in radiology. This file stores medical imaging reports following the DICOM standard and is opened with a DICOM viewer such as the dcm4che-tool.
Other uses include:

Digital Logic Data Files: These SR files may contain data captured with logic analyzers. They are stored in a compressed ZIP format and are referred to as Saleae logic data files or Sigrok logic analyzer data files, managed by tools from Saleae.

Scan Result Files: Some SR files hold the results of system or antivirus scans, such as those created by Dr.Web CureIt!.

Serialized Data Files: Others store measurement data, such as spectroscopy results from OriginPro, which you can learn more about at OriginLab.

How to open SR files

You need a suitable software like dcm4che-tool to open an SR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SR file directly in the browser:. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the SR files:

The SR file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:

30% of all SR files store the data in the DICOM file format. DICOM is short for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM files are used to store, exchange, and transmit medical images from radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy, but also personal data about the patient. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. The files are on average 83 KB in size and range from 17 KB to 160 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DICM and 1.2.840.10008.5.1.4.1.1.88.22. Files like these are sometimes connected to report, adult, spine, mukamunana, private, knee, labs and mars, and include person-related information.
30% of all SR files use the ZIP algorithm, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one SR file. Primarily 3 to 6 files are included. File names are e.g. logic-1-1, logic-1-2, metadata and version. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are on average 42 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 910 KB. The keywords version2PK and metadata- are typical for these files. Examples of file names are session_dump_0x1179D23CDF.sr or signals_from_the_past.sr. Files like these are sometimes connected to session, dump, signals, past, respaldo, sicar, data and read.

How to solve problems with SR files

Associate the SR file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open structured report files. Because only the current version supports the latest SR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available dcm4che-tool update.
