What is an STR file?

STR files mostly belong to dBASE by dBASE. STR is the filename extension of the structure list object file used by dBASE, a relational database management system for microcomputers. Such STR files contain text such as table names, field names, size, and a number of fields which define the structure (schema) of a dBASE database. STR is also a file format used to save Full Motion Video (FMV) clips in PlayStation video games. The file may be ripped from the PS disc and converted to standard video formats. Programs such as PSMPlay can also play STR videos. X-Plane, a flight simulation software saves the information used to define the placement of simulator objects in an STR file. The strings file used by WPS Office, an office productivity software suite also has STR file extension. This STR file contains data used to configure the appearance of the app's user interface. STR extension is also used to store subtitle files.

How to open an STR file

You need a suitable software like dBASE to open an STR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit STR files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 870 bytes to 460 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The keywords STRM are typical for these files. meteor1.str or pneuma1.str is a typical file name.
8% of all STR files start with the bytes 3slo, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 130 KB to 11 MB in size, with a median of 260 KB. The keywords 3slo, RDHS, COHS, shared, COHSt, global and kapR are typical for these files. The file name text_assets_global.str is typical for these files. These files can be linked to global, assets and text.
