Opening a UMP File
The UMP file type is primarily associated with Altova UModel.
What is a UMP file
Some of these files are UML project files that store design models in an XML structure. For example, Altova UModel uses them to keep details of class diagrams and other modeling data. More details are on the Altova UModel webpage.
A second group of UMP files are also related to UML. They appear as unified Modeling Language diagrams or packages used by systems like Umple and MagicDraw UML. These files help capture design elements and relations, making them key in software development. Information on Umple files is available at Umple’s site.
Another use of the UMP extension is for game map files. In this case, an UMP file holds map data in XML format for games such as the Aion game, sometimes even described as an Unreal Engine Map File used with UnrealEd. More can be found at Aion Power Book.
Lastly, a small number of UMP files store rich text content (RTF) and work with applications like Microsoft Word. See more about this at the Microsoft Word webpage.
How to open UMP files
You need a suitable software like Altova UModel to open a UMP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your UMP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a UMP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Download the converted file.
Programs that open and convert UMP files:
- Altova UModel
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. UMP files are often referred to as Altova UModel developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- UModel (Project) by AltovaAltova UModel is a software development tool. Visually design application models in UML and generate Java, C#, or Visual Basic .NET code and project documentation. Or, reverse engineer existing programs into UML 2 diagrams, then fine tune your designs and complete the round trip by regenerating code. This file format is classified as XML.
UMP file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the UMP files:
The UMP file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all UMP files are UModel Project files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 290 KB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0", UModel version, UTF-8, encoding, OpenDiagrams activeDiagram, uuid="00000001-7510-11d9-86f2-000476a22f44" name="Root", visibility="public"><packagedElement><Package uuid="00000003-7510-11d and OpenDiagramEntry.
- 20% of all UMP files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 440 bytes to 14 KB. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16" ?>, <map_painting>, <version>0</version> and <zone_layer>210.
All other UMP files (45%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. RTF and class. These files sometimes refer to gather or source. If you want to find out which format your UMP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ump file to view".
Technical Data for UMP File Extension
a ump project file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with UMP files
- Associate the UMP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open project files. Because only the current version supports the latest UMP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Altova UModel update.
- To make sure that your UMP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .UMP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
