What is a VFS file?

VFS files mostly belong to Printers by HP. The VFS extension is associated with three different files created by three programs. However, it is primarily associated with the Virtual File System Index.

The Virtual File System Index: The VFS files here are categorized as misc files. They are system files that contain an index of directories that are stored in a hard drive or any other media device. These files are mainly used to create a virtual file system, which is capable of speeding up browsing and searching for files on a device.
VentaFax Schedule: These files are categorized as data files. They are used by the VentaFax software to transfer faxes from your computer. The file itself includes a series of scheduled tasks, thus it schedules and manages the transferred faxes.
UFO: VFS files used by UFO are called compressed and game files. They include a series of elements a game may contain such as sound effect, saved game positions, images etc. All the necessary game components are found inside these VFS files. The UFO software is a gaming app that includes a set of various games, few being Aftershock, Afterlight and Aftermath.

Adoption: The system VFS files can only be used by a set of hardware devices on MacOS and Windows based system, not be read, written or opened by a user. While on Linux based systems, these files can be mounted using certain commands. On the other hand, the compressed VFS files and the data ones can only be opened by the software that creates them.

How to open a VFS file

You need a suitable software like Printers to open a VFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VFS file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. VFS is one of the most common file extensions and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in VFS files are:

60% of all VFS files start with the bytes EB 00 90 4D 53 57 49 4E 34 2E 31 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 160 MB in size and range from 39 MB to 630 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MSWIN4.1 and NO NAME FAT32. A common filename is .HPIMAGE.VFS.
8% of all VFS files start with the magic bytes LP, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. VFS files can be up to 450 MB in size, but are often around 2 MB - 210 MB. The files contain the following words: LP1C. The following filename is common: Sounds.vfs or Actors.vfs. Files like these have the following tags: scripts, strings, world, textures, scenes and fonts.

All the rest of the VFS files (32%) have different formats, the following 9 formats can be found: GnomeVFS, Flash, ZWS, data and FUFS. How to solve problems with VFS files

Associate the VFS file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open virtual file system indexes. Because only the current version supports the latest VFS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the HP manufacturer website after an available Printers update.
