What is a W file?

W files mostly belong to OpenEdge by Progress. A W file contains source code for an application created with the Developer Studio (previously AppBuilder) component of OpenEdge integrated development environment. Such scripts usually render an application. Another type of W file is a script written in the "illiterate programming" language used by CWEB programming system. The CTANGLE component of CWEB compiles plain text and embedded code in a W script to C code.

How to open W files

You need a suitable software like OpenEdge to open a W file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your W file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a W file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

W format details:

To find out what program is needed to open W files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the W files:

How to solve problems with W files

  • Associate the W file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open source codes. Because only the current version supports the latest W file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Progress manufacturer website after an available OpenEdge update.
