WEBP files mostly belong to Chrome by Google. WEBP is a raster graphics file format that is optimized for transmitting graphics data over the Internet. It uses a TIFF-based container to store animated/still images. Compared to JPEG format, WEBP provides superior lossy and lossless compression methods that produce smaller files with up to 26% less storage requirements for lossless-compressed images and 25% to 34% less storage requirements for lossy-compressed images. This high compression ratio makes WEBP an ideal format for storing and transferring images over the web. Lossy-compressed WEBP images use the same predictive coding as the VP8 video codec. Modern web browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, GNOME Web, Falcon, and content management systems such as WordPress support WEBP image format. This format is also compatible with image processing programs such as Irfanview, GIMP, and Photoshop.

How can I open a WEBP file?

You need a suitable software like Chrome to open a WEBP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
