What is an XCF file

XCF files mostly belong to GIMP by The GIMP Team. XCF is the native file format used to save image projects created by GIMP graphics editor. The contents on an XCF file includes image(s), text, shapes, effects, configuration, layers, current selection, transparency, channels, and project metadata. This file format is suitable for saving intermediate results of a photo editing task because users can simply reopen an XCF file in the future and pick up where they left off in a previous editing session. Because XCF format is backward compatible, older versions of GIMP can open projects created with newer versions. Seashore image editor is based on GIMP and it also uses XCF as its default image file format. Other image processing software that can read and/or write image data in XCF format include :CinePaint, Krita, Photo-Paint, and Photopea. GNSS stations such as the Leica MS50 and MS60 use a different XCF format to store scanned points.

How to open XCF files

You need a suitable software like GIMP to open an XCF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XCF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XCF file directly in the browser:. How to convert XCF files to JPG, PDF, HTML, DOC, ...

XCF file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. XCF is a very common file type and mainly uses a defined XCF format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 90% of all XCF files are associated with GIMP image format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are often between 62 KB and 17 MB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords gimp-image-grid, (style solid), (fgcolor (color-rgba, gimp xcf v011, bgcolor, color-rgba 0 0 0 1, gimp-comment and gimp xcf file are typical for these files. These files can be linked to logo, template, screenshot, page, proxstickertemplate, avallon, annecy and scan.
• 5% of all XCF files start with the magic bytes 0D 0C 0B 0A 04, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. XCF files are between 360 bytes and 380 bytes in size.

The remaining 5% of all XCF files are different files with different signatures. Tagged as background, lochlann, card, gimp, unbenannt, imagen, frame, front, local, base, gray, icon or ways.
