What is an XPM file

XPM files mostly belong to XnView by XnSoft. XPM (X PixMap) is a plain text raster graphics file format that is mainly used to store icons used in the X Window System. XPM is extended from the XBM (X Bitmap) format but unlike XBM, XPM files can store image data with up to 256 colors and transparent pixels. XPM file format originally stored image data in a static character array. However, all C source code syntax was removed from the XPM format in version 2 (XPM2). The contents of a file saved in this later variant of the XPM format begins with a declaration of the format (XPM2) on the first line, the second line of the file contains integers defining the width, height, number of colors in the image, and characters per pixel, and then; there's the actual image data. GROMACS chemical simulation program stores matrices using the same XPM file format.

How do you open XPM files?

You need a suitable software like XnView to open an XPM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XPM format details:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the XPM files comes to the following conclusion:

The XPM extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in XPM files:

The remaining 8% of all XPM files are files with no common format. The category is calcification, secondary, cluster, cursor, matrix or player. If you want to find out which format your XPM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xpm file to view this image".

an xpm image is a special file format by XnSoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with XPM files

  • Associate the XPM file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest XPM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the XnSoft manufacturer website after an available XnView update.
  • To make sure that your XPM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .XPM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
