What is an XPM file
How do you open XPM files?
You need a suitable software like XnView to open an XPM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPM file directly in the browser:. XPM format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the XPM files comes to the following conclusion:
The XPM extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in XPM files:
- 90% of all XPM files belong to X PixMap bitmap. The files are using the common file format Source. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. XPM files are between 850 bytes and 1 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: /* XPM */, static char, colors, GROMACS, chars and pixel. Files like these are about icon, rmsd, clust, covar, logo, adultchain, splash, bitcoin, sample, xterm and dssp.
- 2% of all XPM files save the data in CAP file format. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 440 MB to 490 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: EULA, MSCF, SetupFai, SetupSuccess, VirtualXPVHD and main.
The remaining 8% of all XPM files are files with no common format. The category is calcification, secondary, cluster, cursor, matrix or player. If you want to find out which format your XPM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xpm file to view this image".
