Opening an XPT File
The XPT file type is primarily associated with SAS.
What is an XPT file?
How do you open XPT files?
You need a suitable software like SAS to open an XPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XPT file format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the XPT files is as follows:
The file type with the extension 'XPT' covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all XPT files belong to SAS Transport format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 5 KB to 3 MB in size, with a median of 300 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: HEADER RECOR, HEADER RECORD*******LIBRARY, LIBRARY HEADER RECORD and 000000000000000000000000000000 SAS SAS SASLIB 9. Such XPT files store data about demo, data and adae.
- 20% of all XPT files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains several sections which are named like Contents and SUBSETS. The average file size is 32 KB with most files being between 14 KB and 150 KB in size. Files like these have the following tags: assay, and often contain personal information.
The remaining 20% of all XPT files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. XPCOM Type Library, ZIP and COMPRESSED. Often described as cexp or layout. If you want to find out what your XPT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with XPT files
- Associate the XPT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest XPT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available SAS update.
- To make sure that your XPT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XPT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
