Opening an XPT File

The XPT file type is primarily associated with SAS.

XPTFile Extension XPT
File extension: XPT
File type:  data file

What is an XPT file?

XPT files mostly belong to SAS. XPT files are used to store data in several specialized formats.
  • SAS Transport File: This is the most common use, where the file holds SAS data sets for exchange across different systems. More details are available at SAS Viya and in SAS Documentation.
  • Molecular Devices Plate Reader Data: Some XPT files are used to store data from plate reader experiments, often handled with SoftMax Pro. Visit Molecular Devices for more info.
  • Oracle XML Publisher Template: Other versions contain report templates packaged with a ZIP structure. They assist in report design via Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher. See Oracle for further details.
  • Cross-Platform Type Library: A few XPT files serve as type libraries for components, as used by Mozilla Firefox. More can be learned at Mozilla.
  • FilExt.com note: The internal structure of an XPT file depends on its origin, and the correct software is needed to open and work with it.

How do you open XPT files?

You need a suitable software like SAS to open an XPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XPT files:

    1. SAS
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XPT files are often referred to as SAS data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Dungeons & Dragons (Core Rules 2) by Wizards of the Coast, Inc.
    3. eXact Packager (Models) by Giunti Interactive Labs S.r.l. (a company of Giunti Publising Group)
eXact Packager is the learn eXact suite module that allows you to create and publish e-learning content. This is a renamed ZIP file. These files are 'Models' used in the Packager. Like you can have template files in the main program, this program has models which could be considered advanced templates. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 50 4B 03 04, ASCII: PK . This file format is classified as Archive.
    4. SAS Transport (XPORT) Format
      All transport data set records are 80 bytes in length. If there is not sufficient data to reach 80 bytes, then a record is padded with ASCII blanks to 80 bytes. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 48 45 41 44 45 52 20 52 45 43 4F 52 44 2A 2A 2A 2A 2A 2A 2A 4C 49 42 52 41 52 59 20 48 45 41 44 45 52 20 52 45 43 4F 52 44 21 21 21 21 21 21 21, ASCII: HEADER RECORD*******LIBRARY HEADER RECORD!!!!!!!. 5. XPCOM Type Library
XPCOM type libraries, or "typelibs", are binary interface description files generated by the XPIDL compiler. Type libraries enumerate the methods of one or more interfaces, including detailed type information for each method parameter. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 58 50 43 4F 4D 0A 54 79 70 65 4C 69 62, ASCII: XPCOM.TypeLib.

    XPT file format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the XPT files is as follows:

The file type with the extension 'XPT' covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 20% of all XPT files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. XPCOM Type Library, ZIP and COMPRESSED. Often described as cexp or layout. If you want to find out what your XPT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with XPT files

    • Associate the XPT file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest XPT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available SAS update.
    • To make sure that your XPT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
