All about XTC Files
The XTC file type is primarily associated with GROMACS.
What is an XTC file?
The primary use of XTC files is for trajectory data in molecular dynamics simulations using GROMACS. They store atom coordinates over time in a compressed, binary format.
This compressed trajectory format helps in reducing file size while retaining essential simulation details.
XTC files are also used in other fields. They may serve as a game texture file format, sometimes called the XTC Texture Container, and are managed with tools like XTX Converter or XTX Extractor. In another role, they work as layout data files for model train designs in XTrackCAD.

How to open XTC files
You need a suitable software like GROMACS to open an XTC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XTC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XTC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XTC files:
- GROMACS
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XTC files are often referred to as GROMACS data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

XTC file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the XTC files produces the following result:
XTC is not a common file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all XTC files start with the bytes 00 00 07 CB 00 crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 120 KB to 630 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. A usual file name is md_0_1.xtc or traj.xtc. These files are attributed to nopbc, data, prod and step.
- 10% of all XTC files start with the magic bytes #XTrackCAD Version: , which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 33 KB in size and range from 7 KB to 82 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. #XTrackCAD Version, MAPSCALE, ROOMSIZE, VERSION 10 3.0.0, 000000, 4.0.3a, Date and TITLE2.
All other XTC files (30%) have different formats, the following 3 formats exist: MOS. If you want to find out which format your XTC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xtc file to analyze".
Technical Data for XTC File Extension
an xtc binary trajectory file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XTC files
- Associate the XTC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open binary trajectory files. Because only the current version supports the latest XTC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available GROMACS update.
- To make sure that your XTC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XTC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
