Opening an XZ File

The XZ file type is primarily associated with XZ Utils.

XZFile Extension XZ
File extension: XZ
File type:  compressed archive file

What is an XZ file?

XZ files mostly belong to XZ Utils by The Tukaani Project. XZ is the native file format for compressed files created using XZ Utils. XZ Utils is a command-line program for lossless data compression which was initially developed for Unix-like operating systems and was made available for Windows from version 5.0 onwards. Like GZ, BZ2, and LZMA, the XZ format only supports the compression of single files, and cannot pack multiple files into an archive (i.e. it is not an archive format). XZ has been developed to replace the LZMA file format. The source code for XZ has been released into the public domain.

  • Features of the XZ Format:
    • Streamable
    • Random-access reading
    • Multiple filters (algorithms)
    • Filter chaining
    • Integrity checks
    • Concatenation
    • Padding

  • Structure of an XZ File: The overall structure of a standalone XZ file is made up of one or more Streams. These may or may not have Stream Padding between them. A typical XZ file has only one Stream, but a decoder that is handling standalone XZ files must support multiple Streams and Stream Padding. On the other hand, a decoder handling an XZ file as an internal part of some other file format or communication protocol is not required to look for multiple Streams.

How can I open an XZ file?

You need a suitable software like XZ Utils to open an XZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XZ file extension format:

To view or edit XZ files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the XZ files:

You will often come across the XZ file type. This is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 8% of all XZ files are files with no common format. These files sometimes refer to kali, control, nexmon, tsetup, json or node. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your XZ file!

How to solve problems with XZ files

  • Associate the XZ file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest XZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the The Tukaani Project manufacturer website after an available XZ Utils update.
  • To make sure that your XZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
